Junior Golf – What Tournaments to Play?

At GOLF PREP Hilton Head, we encourage our players to participate in both local events that can help breed confidence while allowing the junior golfer to experience winning AND state and national events that will build their ranking while showcasing their improved talent to college coaches. We believe that juniors should move up in age divisions ahead of schedule if they are consistently beating the vast majority of the field (and occasionally winning) in their current age group.

When signing up for a state, regional or national event make sure that the tournament will giving you ranking points when you play well. For in-state rankings visit your state’s junior golf association website and look for a description as to how points are awarded and what type of events qualify for ranking point status. For regional and national tournaments check that the event has ranking points with Junior Golf Scoreboard or Golfweek or if AJGA exemptions available. Most regional tours will list on the tournament schedule which ranking system each event qualifies for. If it is not listed ask to see if the event will be ranked BEFORE signing up. In addition to the national rankings that every event brings most state associations will recognize these events as they are all 36-hole tournaments.

The AJGA is the granddaddy of junior golf tours and its where the best juniors in the country play. The AJGA uses a performance matrix to allow entry into its events. Click the following link to the AJGA website and a detailed description for their performance based entry system.

When working through the ranking system you can sometimes forget that you are supposed to be playing golf and not playing the ranking s game! So participate in local events and learn how to win, move up to state and regional events that build your in-state ranking and then target a few AJGA and other national events to experience and win at the highest level in junior golf. However, the most important thing to remember is to have fun playing the game!

Prepping for the U.S. Junior Golf Championship

Woody Woodward, student of GOLF PREP instructor Tim Cooke, came into town last weekend after a top 25 showing at the Bubba Conlee National Junior to prep his game for the U.S Junior next week. Woody has consistently improved his play this year, after being sidelined for two years due to a shoulder injury, and is a great example of our slogan: Train to Grow, Prepare to Win.

Evan Greenplate finishes 3rd at Plantations Tour Championship

GOLFPREP student Evan Greenplate finished third the 11 and 12 year old division at the Plantations Tour Championship last week at the Birck Boilermaker golf complex at Purdue University. As you can see from the photo, the guys who placed 1^st and 2^ndwere quite a bit bigger than Evan and they hit it 60 yards past him! He shot 85, 82 and 77. Playing in final group the last day, his 77 was the low round of the day. He only missed 2 fairways in 3 rounds. Had 28 putts in 2^nd round and 24 in final round. Had 8 up and downs in each of the last 2 rounds, holed out from 40 yards and chipped in twice! Congratulations on your continued success Evan.

GOLF PREP is excited to announce a new era in junior academy instruction with the introduction of the One-on-One Junior Academy for the 2011/2012 school year.

Starting in August we will offer a new academy format with a well-rounded instructional program tailored to each individual. The One-on-One Academy will feature sixteen hours of individual coaching per month. That’s right; no distractions, no generalizations, just a straightforward, personalized plan for success and lots of dedicated guidance. Spring Break Camps, Hilton Head

GOLFPREP is offering golf instruction for juniors during spring break. There are six separate sessions to choose from beginning the week of March 7th.

Camps will run Monday through Wednesday each week, giving the junior and their family plenty flexibility and time to enjoy other amenities on Hilton Head during a typical Saturday-to-Saturday visit.

All aspects of the game will be covered and will use our state of the art technology such as GASP high speed video analysis and SAM Putt Lab to help students understand their golf swing and enhance their overall fundamentals.

GOLFPREP Student Nick Russell in New Zealand

GOLFPREP student Nick Russell traveled to New Zealand with his family over the holidays and played a couple of the country’s top courses; Kauri Cliffs, Matauri Bay, which hosted the Shell Wonderful World of Golf match between Fred Couples and Michael Campbell in 2003 and Gulf Harbour G&CC, home of the 2006 New Zealand Open. Nick kindly sent us this photo of him playing at Kauri Cliffs. Nice swing Nick!

Hurricane Junior Golf Tour Player of the Year and GOLFPREP

GOLFPREP is proud to announce its sponsorship of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s Player of the Year points race. The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour is a southeast regional golf tour and was founded with the intention of providing junior boys, and girls, golfers between the ages of 10-19 an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment. Over the past three seasons the tour has grown at exponential proportions and has become one of the premier Southern choices when it comes to junior golf.

The top point earner in each age division will receive the prestigious GOLFPREP Player of the Year award at the Tour Championship.

SAM Putt Lab @ GOLFPREP Academy

GOLFPREP would like to thank Glen Coombe, The Putting Doctor, for spending the morning with us at the Golden Bear Golf Club on Hilton Head Island. Glen’s sharing of knowledge in using the SAM PuttLab system has enhanced the product that we provide to our students. The SAM PuttLab is the world’s leading putt analysis and putt training system. The PuttLab is based on ultra sound technology that gives the student and instructor real time feedback on multiple parameters of the stroke.

GOLFPREP uses the SAM PuttLab in our instructional programs as we trust the performance of this technology to help our students improve their putting.
